Modernity and tradition for a city in its infancy
The Sandrini team was selected to participate in defining the master plan for Lusail, a new city designed to celebrate the spirit of Qatar, the history and future of a people, ancient and modern at the same time.
The project defines the guidelines of the urban landscape in its various manifestations by blending modern elements and references to Islamic tradition and culture.
Within a total area of 21 kilometers, three types of landscaping are identified, and paving, street furniture, outdoor artwork, a lighting system and signage are designed for each, all of which are specific and unique to the city of Lusail.
The design responds to the specific functions and needs of the different areas: the ‘waterfront’ has a strongly celebratory and scenic character, conceived as a celebration of the sea on which the faces, the ‘Parks’ are large green oases in the urban landscape with shade structures reminiscent of Arab tents, the ‘streetscapes’ have a predominantly commercial vocation and at the points of greatest traffic and visibility are marked by large water portals, the movement of which traces lettering and designs through a sophisticated system of nozzles.
